Intro

Fighting

As you have no doubt seen, when you put your cursor on other players and creatures, you see their names, and under that another line: either "Trade with/Examine" or "Trade with/Attack." When you are in the civilized areas, every character will have the "peaceful options" except some creatures. However, once you go into the Wilderness, you can attack other players, but this means you can also be attacked.  The lvl shown is shown of the players.  If the monster/player is a lower level, you can attack by Left-clicking. If the monster/player is higher, you have to RIGHT-click, a safety, so you don't "accidentally" attack a higher lvl creature, which could mean a very quick death.

When you go into the wilderness, you will see a number in the bottom right hand side of your screen.  This represents how many lvls above and below your combat lvl can attack you.  For example, and lvl 15 is in the lvl 6 wilderness.  A person up to lvl 18 can attack him and down to a lvl 12 can attack him, or be attacked.  If you attack someone in the wilderness, you will get a skull over your head. As long as it is there, if you die (anywhere, not just in the wilderness), you will lose every single item in your inventory.

Levels

Combat consists of 4 main skills, and 3 other skills (Magic, Prayer, and Ranging).  These skills, averaged together in a "funky" way (Attack + Defense + Strength + Hits + (Magic + Prayer/2)/4) equals your Combat level.   To gain levels, you can select controlled, for 25% of the exp. you get goes to each of the four skills. (25% attack, 25% strength, 25% defense, and 25% hits).  If you select one of the other, 75% will go to that specific skill, and the remaining 25% will go to hits.  No matter what you will always give 25% towards your hits.  If your combat lvl is higher than your opponents, then he will appear green.  If he is the exact same, it will be white.  If it is close to the same as yours, it will have a yellowish color added to either green or red) if he is a little higher or a little lower).  If your combat lvl is lower, then it will be red.  The farther apart your combat lvls, the darker the color will be.

Health (Hitpoints)

To regain lost hits that you have received in battle, you can either eat food or just wait.  If you check our Cooking Section, you can find how much certain food heals you.  If you decide to wait, your hits will go up by about 1 to every minute.

Armour and Weapons

As you advance through the levels, you can wear different types of armour, as well as better weapons, etc.  You defense lvl determines what kind of armour you can wear, while your attack determines which kind of sword you can wield.  A battle axe (not an axe), is determined by both your strength and attack (i.e. Your attack and strength have to be 20 to wield a Mithril battle axe).

Pking

Pking is short for Player Killing.  A PKer is someone who kills other people in the wilderness, and take the items that are dropped.  Most are Pures, meaning that they mainly train their strength, their are many different ways people think are the best, but the most common setup is to have your defense around 10-15(to wear black), your attack at 40(to wield r2h, and your strength as high as possible.  Some pures/pkers believe that even a defense of 5 is even to high.

Training

When you start out in Lumbridge, your combat levels will probably be one of your most important skills.  You should first start training on chickens which can be found north from your starting location (where you first appeared in Runescape), across a bridge, and then more north.

1-5:  Attack chickens, leveling up on all your combat skills evenly (i.e. 1 attack lvl, 1 defense lvl, 1 strength lvl, 1 attack lvl….)  Don’t worry about collecting chicken meat or feathers or bones, just work on your combat.

5-15:  Move across the street to cows (east).  Here you can collect meat, and then cook it to increase you cooking, Firemaking, and woodcutting all at once.  Al l these skills will benefit you later.  If you wish to gain money instead of food, you can also train on the goblins around the bridge.  An even combination of these two will help you, giving you both money and food.

15-20:  Switch to the barbarians in barbarian village.  These are a little bit easy, but they are the only monster that is a good trainer at the level.  If you’re feeling cocky, try dwarves, but they will not let you level up as fast.

20-35:  Move west to Ice Mountain, and train on the dwarves that roam in the forest basin and on the upper cliff near the entrance to the Dwarven Mines.  When you are low on hits, simply go to the monastery located north of the forest basin near where you are training.  Nearing your upper levels, you may think that dwarves are a little to easy, but since you can kill them so fast, you gain a lot of experience.

35-50:  Move up north from your dwarf training spot to the black knights fortress, and train on the guards inside or outside the fortress, to get inside, you need iron chain mail and a bronze medium helmet Don’t worry about going inside the fortress at first, just don’t go into the dining hall with the black knights unless you are sure you are ready, they will attack you.

50-70:  Train on the black knights inside the fortress in the dining hall, or upstairs on the 3rd floor where there are 4 guards and an alter so you can use your prayer to help train faster.  Most players complete the Dragon Slayer’s Quest, and train on the lesser demons under Crandor and Karamja during their later levels.

70-99:  Training now depends on your preference, and what you loot you wish to get.  Most players train on Lesser Demons, Skeletons (lvl 54), White Knights, and Black Knights.
