Prayer

Intro

Prayer is a skill that can help you with your combat in different ways (accuracy, strength, etc.).  To get a higher prayer level, you must bury bones.  Different bones give different experience.  To use a prayer, go to the "Magic" book icon, and select the Prayer tab.  The prayer (like other things) are color coded to tell you what you can do with certain spells.  White spells can be used, Black spells mean you are not "devoted" enough to the gods of RuneScape (you Prayer level is not high enough).  Green spells mean that the spell is active (click to activate it to get this color), just click on the spell again to deactivate it.  You can use as many prayer as you want, however it will drain you prayer points faster.  Prayer points are the same as your level to begin with (i.e. 43/43), however they will slowly go down at a rate (drain rate) (40/43) that can be seen here.  The higher the drain rate the faster the prayer points will drain, and the faster you will run out of prayer.  To recharge your prayer, you have to find an alter and pray.  It is always a good idea to recharge whenever you can, since you cannot use your prayer until it is recharged.  If you don't use your prayer, then you prayer will never drain.  Prayer is a hard skill to train in, and is almost impossible to make money off it.  Usually players will just bury any bones they find doing other skills.

Bones

Prayer is a “supernatural” skill, but requires no runes to use, just previous experience.  Prayer levels are gained by burying bones which, depending on the type, give you a certain amount of experience.

Bone Type Experience
Regular Bones 3.75 xp
Big Bones 12.5 xp
Bat Bones* 4.5 xp
Dragon Bones* 60 xp

* is a member only item

Prayers

Prayer can help you by increasing you attack, strength, or defense ability by 5%, 10%, and 15%, and there are some special abilities such as faster healing.   When you use a prayer, it will drain from your prayer at a certain rate, see the Drain Chart.

Drain Rates

The Drain Rate is the amount of "aura" each prayer costs you.  A higher drain rate will decrease your prayer faster, and a lower drain rate prayer will decrease it slower.  The higher prayer you have, the longer you can use prayers.  The chart below lets you figure out how long you can last with a certain drain rate.  To the left of the drain rate tells you how long it will take you to loose 1 prayer point (level).  Simply multiply the seconds by your prayer level to get how many seconds you can use that prayer.

Drain Rate Seconds per Point
10 18
15 12
30 6
60 3

Holy Symbols

Holy Symbols enhance your prayer, and it can help with other stats.  A Holy Symbol of Saradomin raises your adds 8 to your prayer (not prayer points, its the prayer beside your weapon/armour points).  The Unholy Symbol of Zamorak adds 1 to weapon aim, weapon strength, armour, and 6 to prayer.  It also is rumored to slow down the drain rate when using prayer, however the exact percent is still unknown.

Prayer Guild (Monastery)

The Prayer Guild is located on the 2nd floor of the Monastery and requires a prayer level of 31 to go up the ladder (located south of the beds).  Inside there is an alter, monks outfit, and Brother Jerrod.  The alter will temporarily raise your prayer 2 extra points (i.e. 56/54).  The complete monks outfit can add 12 prayer. Brother Jerrod can bless a stringed (not unstringed!) holy star made of silver which adds 8 prayer.  The Crafting Guide details making a holy star.

Training

There are few places to gain prayer levels in RuneScape, but a few of the better ones are:

  • Chickens-  One of the fastest ways to gain prayer levels is to kill chickens at either the Lumbridge farms or the farm north of Port Sarim.  Chickens should take only 1-2 hits to kill, giving you a lot of bones in a short amount of time.

  • Giants-  Giants are a very good source of experience for the people with a fairly high prayer and can kill giants easily.  It is located in the Edgeville Dungeon at the far back.  An easier way to get there is to go west of Varrock (east of the river) and find a small building sitting there.  You need to have a brass key (get from previous time in dungeon).

  • Dragons-  If you are a member, and have a high enough combat level, you can fight dragons and get dragon bones, which are worth 60 experience each.
