Scams

Scams are when people, known as scammers, who are "untrustworthy and dishonest people who will look to gain an unfair advantage in the game by trying to scam you of your items/account."

"If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."

Scam #1- Programs and Auto-miners

There are many sites out there with programs and Auto-miners that they say will help you in Runescape, this is not true.  Unless it is from a very reputable source that you have known for some time, don't put your username or password into any program.  Most of these will simply send your username and password to the creator, who logs on, changes your password, changes you recovery questions, and steals your money.  If you are fast enough, you can recover your account, but it is very likely you will have any items left.  DON'T DOWNLOAD THEM!

Scam #2- Scam Trading

Some people offer to sell steel, but really put iron in its place since they look nearly identical, but iron is cheaper.  Always look by "hovering" your mouse above the item to see what it is, and then make sure you read through the 2nd screen thoroughly to make sure you know what you are getting.  Some scammers also at first put the steel item, then right before the trade switch it to iron.  Always check what you are getting.

Scam #3- Passwords

Never, under any condition give out your password to anybody, even your best friend next door.  No matter how well you think you know somebody, or no matter how good he really is, the lure of free items is too much for some people.  If your account is stolen, Jagex is not responsible for your mishap, so NEVER give out your password.

Scam #4- Weapon/Armour "Upgrades" & Duplication

If someone offers to "upgrade" your item to a higher metal or give your item more power, don't give it to them.  There is no such thing as weapon/armour upgrades.  After a weapon is smithed, it cannot be changed into anything else, ever.  The only exception is changing legs and chest plates to their female counterparts, but their is no gain in their defense, and it requires no special skill.  Do this yourself.  Another scam like this is "duplication," where someone offers to duplicate your item if you give it to them.  Don't fall for this, their is no way to duplicate or upgrade armour.  If you give your weapon/armour to a scammer, you will never see it again.

Scam #5- Jagex Personal

If someone claims they are Jagex Personal and asks for your password, money, or items, do not believe them.  Jagex (as it says on their site) will NEVER, EVER ask for your password, money, or items.  Remember, Jagex controls all the servers that handle your account, so if they wanted something, they can have it :)

Scam #6- Free Smithing

Be careful when giving bars to someone for "Free Smithing."  Some people who do this are perfectly honest and give you your item right back, but others take advantage of people's trust.  Another topic that is close to this is free gem cutting, so pay attention again to this.  If the person is surrounded by people yelling, "You stole my stuff!", take a hint.

Scam #7- "Alt-4"

For example if someone tells for you to press "Alt-4", don't press it, because whatever else they tell you will be a scam.  Don't listen to whatever else they have to say.

Scam #8- Email

Never reply to an email claiming to be Jagex or Andrew, even if the address looks like it came from the Jagex website, the only time Jagex will contact you is for personal information, not you password or username (which they have in the servers sitting 5 feet away).  Also, Jagex never sends it inquires through email, login on the official website to the Message Centre.

Jagex's Advice for Reporting Abuse

Advice from the ONLY Official RuneScape Website, www.RuneScape.com

How to handle abusive players

If whilst you are playing RuneScape, you happen to come across another player that is either harassing yourself or other players, or is generally being disruptive, there are various things you may do.

In game system

Firstly you may report the player in game via the red "report abuse" button situated to the bottom right of the game client just to the right of the private messages tab.

The best circumstances to report a player in game are the following:

  1. Swearing, profanity or racial abuse (see guidance on how to use the Report Abuse System below)
  2. Trade scams (lied about the trade to steal items from you)
  3. Asking other players for passwords (trying to steal accounts)
  4. Attempting to buy or sell a RuneScape account
  5. Impersonating our staff
  6. Advertising a scam website

This will enable us with your help to take quick and effective action against the abusive players in Runescape.

Please Note: (reference trade scams)

We must remind you though that if you do lend anyone anything it is at your OWN RISK! Many people are conned by others and whilst we are trying to catch them, the problem will be minimized if you only engage in swaps and trusts if you are FULLY 100 percent convinced that they are trustworthy.

Please also note that we cannot replace any money or items that have been lost.

Punishments

Our punishments range from a verbal warning, to black marks being accrued against your account. This will lead very quickly to temporary and permanent bans should you re-offend. The severity of punishment will depend on the severity of each report and the number of total reports against a player.

Caution - How to use the Report Abuse System

If you are going to send in a report against a player you must make sure that it is a legitimate claim of abuse. This means that it must contain evidence of the above situations or we will not be able to take any action.

Before sending in a verbal abuse report please try and think about whether you are genuinely offended by the other players remarks. If the chat filter has blocked out the profanity then there is no need to send in a report. Please only do so if you are genuinely offended.

Sending in hoax reports slows us down with dealing with your other queries, and repeatedly doing so is likely to result in action being taken against your account.

For example petty abuse such as simply calling someone a "noob" is not a good enough reason to report someone for abuse. Being offensive to someone else and then reporting them when they retaliate is also a complete misuse of the system. Our logs clearly show the incident that is reported, so it will be easy see who actually started the abuse.

So please, take some time and use some common sense to ensure that your report is valid.

Online Customer Support forms

There are certain circumstances when it is better to report players through our online report forms which can be found here.

These situations might include

  • players using macromeres or cheating programs
  • hack sites that perhaps you might have stumbled across
  • Any other valid abuse that you do not feel can be reported in game

Further helpful hints on abusive players

If you come across a player in game that is harassing you and you wish to ignore the player, you can do so by reading the following:

If there is a particular user causing a problem then use the ignore function to block further messages. (To do this point at the friends menu, click on the 'ignore' tab, click where it says 'click here to add a name' and finally enter the name of the user to block.)

If you continue to receive unwanted messages, or receive harassment from multiple players then you should use the privacy controls to block all messages from everyone except your friends. (To do this point at the configuration menu, and ensure all 4 privacy settings are switched to 'on').
